TERRA TEAM MEMBERS' PROJECTS

Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Education Program

TERRA’s Team Members created and implemented the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Education Program for UMES and Wor-Wic Community College, which serves as the precursor to TERRA's Enterprise Development in the Renewable Energies Industry Initiative

Team Members accomplished the following at UMES:

  • Developed a Renewable Energy Field Testing and Learning Facility on campus
  • Installed a new 100-meter tall, fully instrumented meteorological tower
  • Developed an interdisciplinary business and engineering curriculum that raised and sustained interest among students and faculty
  • Implemented pilot business courses in:

                  1) Renewable Energy Business Structure and Project

                      Planning; and

                  2) Project Financing

  • Collaborated with school staff in the development of relevant course materials and curriculum
  • Assisted UMES with the process of accreditation to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) that was granted resulting in attracting more professors and students
  • Collaborated with school in obtaining additional funding for programming
  • Provided training on wind energy resource assessment techniques and software tools such as WindPro, one of the leading software packages in the wind energy industry
  • Established an Academic-Industry Advisory Board that includes representatives from stakeholder groups that advise on curriculum development, provide mentoring, and leverage the networks, training and jobs needed for future renewable energy businesses
  • Enabled student participation at regional and national wind and solar industry conferences

Wor-Wic Community College

  • Developed renewable energies technology training programs
  • Developed an Associates of Applied Science (AAS) in Environmental-Energy Technology allowing graduates direct entry into the energy sector related workforce
  • Developed a Certificate of Proficiency (COP) in Sustainable Energy Technology program designed for students looking to update/upgrade their knowledge and skill sets or for the new entrant looking to enter the workforce quickly
  • Expanded the COP program to include Geographic Information Systems classes
  • Developed certification courses that provided students with North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) certification, an entry level certification for installation and service of Photovoltaic Systems
  • Consulted with school in their purchase of additional solar and wind equipment
  • Created not-for-credit continuing education programs
